Description

A swatch of fabric attested to as being removed from the parachute of Alan Shepard’s Freedom 7 capsule after it was recovered by the USS Lake Champlain in the North Atlantic Ocean on May 5, 1961. The swatch, 1″ x .75″, is affixed to a color semi-glossy 8.25″ x 11.75″ presentation photo sheet featuring the Mercury-Redstone 3 rocket; the reverse of the photo is numbered 7/25. Includes a letter of authenticity from Florian Noller and a copy of a letter from Harold French, a NASA telemetry technician who affirms that the parachute “was hoisted and hung in the hangar bay for several days. The people involved in the project were then given permission to lower the parachute and cut it into sections for souvenirs. This is how I came by the section which I gave to Steve Colby.” Below this line, Noller has signed and added, “I certify that I got this piece from Steve Colby in 1995.” In fine condition.
