Description

Leader of the Czechoslovak independence movement (1884-1948) who was president of Czechoslovakia at the time of Hitler's incursion. Desirable fountain pen signature, "Dr. E. Benes,” across a 50h Czechoslovakia stamp, affixed to a light green 4 x 2.75 commemorative folding slip imprinted "Free Czechoslovakia in Free Europe." Stamped "985" in the lower right corner, and imprinted inside: "A special limited issue autographed by Dr. Edvard Benes, New York—1939." In fine condition.

Benes was president of Czechoslovakia from 1935 to 1938, and again from 1945 to 1948. During the interim period during World War II, he led the Czechoslovak government-in-exile 1939 to 1945.
