Description

Financier and philanthropist (1874-1960) who was the only son among the five children of Standard Oil co-founder John D. Rockefeller. Partly-printed DS in French, one page, 10.5 x 8.25, gilt-stamped royal letterhead, July 16, 1927. Document requesting admission as a non-resident member into the Union Interalliee, an exclusive social and dining club established in 1917 upon American entry into World War I. In part (translated): "After having read the program of the Union Interalliee, the main purpose of which is to strengthen the links of the agreement by placing itself in the field of personal relations, I have the honor to ask you to register me among the candidates for non-resident membership." Rockefeller's personal information, including his occupation as a philanthropist, is filled out in another hand; he does, however, write in his own birth date, "January 29th 1874." Signed in fountain pen by John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and countersigned by famous architect Welles Bosworth (designer of MIT's Cambridge campus and the AT&T Building, and restorer of the Palaces of Versailles and Fontainebleau) and diplomat Sheldon Whitehouse as sponsors. In fine condition, with light overall creasing.
