Description

Political letter by Senator John Tyler: "The two great parties seem to be making preparations for a battle"

ALS, one page, 7.25 x 9.5, December 24, 1831. Handwritten letter to "Col. Tomkins," in part: "Your letter…reached me this morning and I have lost no time in addressing the Secretary of War in favour of your son. Mr. Stevenson is at this time absent from the City on a visit to Fredericksburg. Congress having adjourned over until Tuesday. Upon his return I will mention the subject to him with a view to obtain his aid. I trust that the application will be crown'd with success. We have nothing of political interest. The two great parties seem to be making preparations for a battle, but when they will make the onset remains to be seen. We shall have, doubtlessly, noise and smoke enough—but I rest in the hope that when the atmosphere clears, we shall have for our country an unclouded sky." Handsomely matted with a portrait to an overall size of 17 x 17. In fine condition.
