Description

Napoleon's sister (1780-1825), who served as a model for Antonio Canova's 'Victorious Venus.' She was also Napoleon's most loyal sibling, visiting him in exile and liquidating her assets to assist him. Manuscript DS in French, signed “Pauline Borghese,” one page, 8 x 12.5, October 7, [no year]. Document regarding the sale of some diamonds which were in the hands of Mr. Vanutelli, for which he had apparently offered 5,000 piastres, on which she had already received a 200 piastre deposit. She is willing to settle for 4,500 piastres in order to secure the accouterments of her horses which are in the hands of Mr. Giorgi. She discusses further details about the care of her horses by Mr. Giorgi when she is away from Rome and he will pay expenses during her absence. In very good to fine condition, with some staining and paper damage along the left edge, affecting some of the text but not the signature. Pauline was known for her extravagance and here apparently sold part of her jewelry collection to support other pleasures.
