Marvelous vintage matte-finish 4.75 x 6.25 portrait of Henri Matisse by André Ostier, signed and inscribed in the lower border in fountain pen, "A Mademoiselle Monette Vincent… Henri Matisse, 21/12/42," along with a striking sketch of a flower; on the reverse, Matisse draws a wonderful sketch of a female face—this might well be a likeness of the dedicatee, Monette Vincent, who modeled for him. Also signed below the image in pencil by the photographer, "A. Ositer." In very fine condition. Matisse painted several portraits of Monette Vincent in 1942, including the oil 'La femme en rose,' and the figure drawn here indeed resembles his known depictions of her. With two original sketches from the hand of the master—drawn on a high-quality portrait of himself—this is a superior, museum-worthy Matisse autograph.
