Description

Leoncavallo writes to the conductor of a successful performance of 'La Boheme'

Italian composer (1857-1919) best known for his operas, particularly the beloved repertoire staple 'Pagliacci.' ALS in Italian, signed "R. Leoncavallo," four pages on two adjoining sheets, 8.5 x 11, May 31, 1898. Letter to conductor Luigi Bernardi, concerning a performance in Vicenza of Leoncavallo's 'La Boheme' that Bernardi had recently conducted. In part (translated): "My dear maestro, I must excuse myself for not having written…but I was in bed with a gastric fever…I received a newspaper where I read that the result of the work has been very good, and I have to admit that I am surprised not to have received a brief not describing the soiree. Possibly you were angry because I had not written? I have not explained why—anyway, you could have given me some details!" He again states how happy he is that the performance went well, asking Bernardi to "thank the singers, especially the good Ledelmeyer, Signora Leoni, Bodero and all the others, and my thanks to the orchestra." In fine condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds (one vertical fold passing through the first letter of the signature), and uniform toning. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Leoncavello's hand, as well as a full translation.
