Description

TLS signed in pencil, one page, 7 x 10.25, The New Yorker letterhead, November 19, 1943. Letter to Professor McDowell, in part: "The American Way, its plans and purposes, sound fine to me. I hereby give you permission to use the Ghost story for $25, or if you are pushed into a financial corner, free of charge. It isn't my newer stories that I like best. I think perhaps my best ones are 'The Black Magic of Barney Haller,' 'Something To Say,' 'and 'The Greatest Man in the World.' The Ghost is pretty much smooth comedy writing, done when all my devices were at the best, namely the age of thirty-seven. A man goes steadily downhill after that period, I think." Thurber types a brief postscript at the conclusion and circles a suggested price in pencil. In fine condition.
