Description

TLS signed “Bill Saroyan,” one page, 5.75 x 9, Park Oteli (Istanbul) letterhead, May 25, 1964. Letter to John Appleton, presumably his agent, written in a rambling, pressured style, but with interesting literary and personal content. In part: "I am just back from a 15-day drive all through Turkey, including the city of Bitlis where my father and mother were born. I am going to be at this hotel until a week from today (at least) as I expect to write The Istanbul Comedy…a new play…I’ve examined the galleys of the P. T. Barnum story for the June 13th issue: you’ve probably put it away and if so, that’s O.K. as the thing has been rather nicely shaped up to be pleasant but not rough on some very good people...Now, a big favor: can you please telephone Hilda Lindley at Harcourt Brtace & World and ask her to please rush a copy by airmail of One Day in the Afternoon of the World, along with any reviews she may have." Saroyan makes a few hurried corrections and embellishments to the text in his own hand, including asterisks next to "airmail" and the handwritten word "NOW" in the lower margin, which further emphasize his atypically excited state of mind. In fine condition.
