UPDATE: A complete listing of the robots is available here.
Large collection of 53 vintage and vintage-inspired toy robots from the collection of renowned artist Andres Serrano. Serrano came to prominence in the late 1980s with 'Immersion (Piss Christ)' (1987), a photograph of a crucifix submerged in urine. Serrano's work drew the ire of Congress and the praise of critics and collectors alike. For a recent project, he assembled a collection of hundreds of toy robots and created a series of larger-than-life photographic portraits of the uncanny creatures. His exhibition, 'The Robots,' was held at the Baldwin Gallery from June 24-July 24, 2022.
This collection comprises dozens of robots ranging from the 1950s to the modern day, many with their original boxes. Many are by desirable makers including Horikawa, Yonezawa, Tin Age, Schylling, and others. Two of the robots—a mechanical Roby Robot by Ha Ha Toy and a Cosmo Robot by Schylling—have been photo-matched to photographs in Andres Serrano's 'The Robots' exhibition. The robots have not been tested for functionality.
