German naturalist and explorer (1769-1859) who wrote Kosmos, a massive five-volume study which attempted to unify the various branches of man's knowledge. ALS in French, signed “Alexander Humboldt,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 10, October 18, 1858. Lengthy untranslated handwritten letter by the celebrated naturalist. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, several light stains, scattered creases, a mounting strip affixed to one edge, a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top, and a few minor edge nicks and tears.
