Champion bare-knuckle boxer born Norman Selby (1872-1940) who was known for his ‘corkscrew’ punch, dirty tactics, and being the possible inspiration for the idiom ‘The Real McCoy.’ After a promising start in early films, he was later tried for robbing and holding a dozen people hostage the day after allegedly murdering his fiancee. Paroled from prison, Selby committed suicide, leaving an enigmatic note that said he ‘could not endure this world's madness.’ Rare fountain pen signature, "Charles 'Kid' McCoy,” on an off-white 3.25 x 1.75 card. In fine condition.
