Continental Army officer (1743-1827) who saw action at Bunker Hill and White Plains, and wintered with George Washington at Valley Forge; he was later a member of the Society of Cincinnati. Rare Revolutionary War-dated ALS signed “John Popkin Lieu't Col'o,” one page, 7.75 x 6, December 2, 1778. Sent from Boston, a handwritten letter to the Massachusetts Board of War, reporting that Charles Knowles, Benjamin Upham, and Dr. Samuel Adams (the only son of Massachusetts Governor Samuel Adams) were omitted from the clothing return and wish to be supplied. The reverse bears three receipt statements, one of which is signed by Popkin, “John Popkin, LC,” and the other two are signed by Adams, “Sam’l Adams, Surg’n.” In fine condition, with a typed information caption stapled to the reverse.
