American author (1836-1902) best known for his colorful tales of California pioneers, including the much-anthologized story 'The Outcasts of Poker Flat.' Three items signed by Bret Harte: an ALS, three pages on adjoining sheets, February 6, 1879, sending thanks for notification of his honorary membership in a club, commenting, "I shall of course be delighted to avail myself of all its privileges"; an ALS, one page, December 5, 1891, remitting a check in the amount of £21.12.6; and a partly-printed draft to E. Bliss, Jr., of the American Publishing Co. for $150 payable to S. S. & E. D. Halsey, October 1, 1874, filled out and signed by Harte. In overall very good to fine condition, with a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top of the later letter, and several edge tears and creases to the pay order.
