Description

American character actor (1882-1964) best remembered for his roles in the Universal Studios horror films such as Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), and The Mummy (1932). ALS signed “Uncle Van,” three pages, 6 x 9, August 8, 1961. Handwritten letter to his nephew Bill, in part: "I'm sorry I didn't write you before this, but my alibi is—I didn't feel so good. I only stayed in St. Paul, Minn. & Chaska a day all told and felt so rotten that I took the plane—a 707 jet—and champagne flight no less—to S.F. and arrived there in a few hours—but not feeling so good…I can't say much about the town, as I haven't been down town yet, which I hope to do before the week is gone. I started today to do some odds & ends around the house, and hope from now on to be able to do some work they wanted done." He goes on to discuss a rain coat and some family matters. In fine condition.
