German-born British zoologist, ichthyologist, and herpetologist (1830-1914) regarded as one of the most productive reptile taxonomists, with more than 340 reptile species described. ALS signed “A. Gunther,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, February 18, 1883. Handwritten letter to English botanist and taxonomist Maxwell T. Masters, as "The Editor, Gardener's Chronicle." In full: "The creature which you have sent to me for examination is somewhat perplexing. It is not a leech, but probably a Nemertean worm. It would be a great help to me in determining it, if you could inform me, whether the locality where it was found is near to the sea; whether the fern-pot was in a cool or warm house; whether it is possible that the creature has been imported from abroad. It is certainly not a British terrestrial animal." In fine condition.
