Description

German botanist (1844-1930) known for his prodigious work on plant taxonomy and phytogeography; his system of plant classification, the 'Engler system,' is still used by many herbaria and is followed by writers of many manuals. Five ALSs, all signed "A. Engler" or "Dr. A. Engler," totaling seven pages, dated from 1876 to 1894. All to English botanist and taxonomist Maxwell T. Masters, with good botanical content throughout. Engler thanks Masters for sending botanical journal articles (mentioning several pieces on Anthurium varieties), asks for identification of an "Aristolochia promissa" specimen, declines an invitation to a conference, and comments on a specimen sent him: "It grows here in many good specimens and is now very rich in flower." In overall fine condition.
