Scarce pairing of two signed items: a fantastic vintage glossy 9.75 x 7.5 close-up portrait of the Russian master, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "A Boaz Piller, Très sincerement, Serge Prokofieff, 1938," adding a musical quotation below; and a 5.5 x 8.5 program page for a Prokofiev recital on March 26, 1938, including 'Chout,' 'Piano Concerto No. 1,' 'Peter and the Wolf,' and 'Romeo and Juliet,' signed in fountain pen, "Serge Prokofieff." Attractively mounted, matted, and framed together to an overall size of 28 x 19. In fine condition.
Boaz Piller was the contrabassoonist of the Boston Symphony and befriended Prokofiev on his visit to conduct the BSO in this 1938 program. The musical quotation of very low notes written on sub-octave ledger lines are certainly one of the lines from the conrtabassoon part in one of the works on the program.
