Description

From the collection of longtime IOC member James Worrall—a rare pairing of felt chest emblem patches worn by Worrall as a competitor during the 1934 British Empire Games, the second edition of what is now known as the Commonwealth Games, which was held in England, between August 4-11, 1934. The patches measure 4.75 x 5.5 and 5.5 x 6 and feature nearly identical heraldic imagery: three martlets in flight within mountains below two silver crowns, which are separated by an open book bearing the words ‘In Domino Confido’ (‘I trust in the Lord’)—this heraldry is essentially the same used and originated by Montreal’s McGill University, where Worrall received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1935. Included with the lot is a matte-finish photo of an athlete at said games, upon whose chest is embroidered an example of the offered patches.

From the estate of James Worrall.
