ALS in French, signed "C. Saint-Saens," one page both sides, 5 x 7, January 14. Handwritten letter of profuse apology for his oversight of the previous day. He had been completely absorbed in writing a quarter and had forgotten about the organ examination. He insists that this was not through lack of interest, as he finds the organ and composition examination particularly interesting and moreover the pleasure of his correspondent's company is sufficient attraction in itself. He also mentions César Franck, who had just died: Saint-Saens calls Franck "an old Jesuit" in the letter. Saint-Saens disliked him and refused to help raise money for a memorial statue. Handsomely matted and framed with a portrait by Goodspeed's Book Shop to an overall size of 14.75 x 12.25, with a window in the backing for viewing the reverse. In fine condition.
