Description

ALS signed “John S. S.,” one page both sides, 4.25 x 3.25, 31 Tite Street letterhead, no date. Handwritten letter to British politician, art collector, and socialite Sir Philip Sassoon, in full: "I am so glad you are almost back—I will dine with pleasure on Friday 23d—and come to lunch on Tuesday at 1.30 if you don't mind an American boy from Cambridge being here. You may have met his mother Mrs. Chamber abroad. If Mrs. Hunter is staying with you will she come too? Let me know—if you prefer any other day except Wednesday, out with it." Handsomely double-matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 17.75 x 13; there is a window in the backing for viewing the front of the letter. In fine condition. A fine letter that illustrates Sargent's wide social circle, which offered an abundant selection of portrait subjects.
