Partly-printed DS, signed “Nath. Hawthorne,” one page, 7.5 x 6.5, November 22, 1853. As consul of the United States at Liverpool, Hawthorne certifies that "the facts set forth in the preceding certificate subscribed by A. F. W. Maxwell…merchants, are in my opinion just and true, and deserving of full faith and credit." Handsomely double-matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 20 x 13.5; a window in the backing allows viewing of the reverse. In fine condition, with some light creasing, and faint toning from prior display.
