Description

After his resignation, Profumo worked as a volunteer at Toynbee Hall, a charity in East London, and became its chief fundraiser. These charitable activities helped to restore his reputation and he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1975. TLS signed “Yours sincerely, John Profumo,” one page, 8 x 10, Toynbee Hall letterhead, March 9, 1989. Letter to Mrs. J. Hind, in full: “Thank you so much for your kind letter, which I much appreciated. What you had to say is most encouraging at a time like this. My wife joins me in sending you our warmest wishes and renewed thanks for the thought which prompted you to write.” Profumo adds the salutation in his own hand. In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
