Impressive vintage matte-finish 19 x 13.5 photo of Christy's monumental 1940 mural 'Signing of the Constitution,' affixed to its original 22 x 17 mount, signed and inscribed on the mount in fountain pen, "To Robert Lee Hunter, with admiration and best wishes always, Howard Chandler Christy, March 18, 47." In very good to fine condition, with silvering to the image, and somewhat heavy creasing (and a short tear and minor surface loss) to the lower right corner of the mount in the signature area.
Howard Chandler Christy's painting of the signing of the United States Constitution was commissioned in 1939 as part of the congressional observance of the Constitution's sesquicentennial. Completed in 1940, the 20-by-30-foot framed oil-on-canvas scene is among the best known images in the United States Capitol: today, it is displayed in the east grand stairway of the House wing. Portraying Independence Hall in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787, George Washington is the most prominent figure in the painting: he stands on the platform next to Richard Spaight of North Carolina, who is signing the document.
