Description

TLS, two pages, 8.5 x 11, Handy Brothers Music Co., Inc. Publishers letterhead, December 6, 1955. Letter to Daisy L. Meyers, in part: "We have in my old McGuffey reader a poem 'Burial of Sir John Moore' by Charles Wolfe, but not one by Alexander as you stated…Years ago, when I was writing my autobiography, 'Father of the Blues' I was saying something about these McGuffey Readers with the lessons influencing my life…There was one lesson in his Fifth Reader that influenced my life and probably led to the little world fame that is mine. The lesson was—'There is no Excellence without Great Labor.'" In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. A fascinating letter referring to his childhood, his autobiography 'Father of the Blues,' and the conflict between his career in the ministry and his destiny as a musician.
