Boxer and referee (1887-1974) considered one of the 'White Hope' boxers of the early 1900s. Vintage off-white 5 x 3 autograph card with typed information fields, filled out and signed in black ballpoint, “‘Gunboat' Smith,” who adds his weight division, “L. Heavy,” notes that he boxed from 1908 to 1922, lists his title as “White Hope,” and adds "Champion" as his closing remark. In very fine condition. Gunboat fought 12 different Hall of Fame boxers a combined total of 23 times, a list that includes Dempsey, Greb, Langford, and Carpentier, among others.
