War-dated TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, March 9, 1942. Letter to Mr. Gallagher, in full: “I clearly remember autographing two, or it may have been three of your bookplates, and enclosing them in your self addressed envelope for mailing. I did not autograph any more, because you see you did not explain before that that you had nine of my books on your shelves. And collecting writers’ autographs for swapping purposes is an ancient racket. So I decided that two (or maybe three) was doing pretty well by this stranger. However, here are your nine book plates autographed now, with my thanks for the implied compliment that those nine books hold.” In fine condition, with light show through from a Beckett sticker on the back.
