American judge and politician from South Carolina (1882-1972) who served the state as a congressman, senator, and as its 104th governor; additionally, he also served as a Supreme Court Justice and later as Secretary of State, making him one of the very few politicians to have served in the highest levels of all three branches of the American federal government while also being active in state government. Letter to Warren Austin on his appointment as US Ambassador to the United Nations, in part: "I am greatly pleased to inform you that the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, has appointed you the Representative of the United States of America to the United Nations with the rank and status of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, and the Representative of the United States of America in the Security Council of the United Nations. Your salary will be at the rate of $20,000.00 per annum, effective upon the date on which you take your Oath of Office." In fine condition.
