Description

Flown ‘Specialist Seat Egress’ cue card and embroidered crew patch that were flown into low Earth orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger during the STS-8 mission, both of which are affixed to a 13 x 17 display mount presented to astronaut Shannon Lucid, which is signed in black felt tip by Richard Truly, Dan Brandenstein, Guion Bluford, Dale Gardner, and William Thornton, with all signing first name only and one adding an inscription: “Thanks for tucking us in for the night…flight!” The display, which also features two affixed launch photos, is affixed to a 16 x 20 cardstock mount. In fine condition.

Biochemist and retired NASA astronaut Shannon Lucid (born 1943), at one time, held the record for the longest duration stay in space by an American, as well as by a woman. She has flown in space five times—STS-51-G, STS-34, STS-43, STS-58, and STS-76/79—the latter of which included a prolonged mission aboard the Mir space station in 1996; she is the only American woman to have served aboard Mir. In 2002, Discover magazine recognized Lucid as one of the 50 most important women in science.
