Rare handwritten statement in black ink by Wally Schirra, one page, 8.5 x 11, penned on his personal letterhead and signed at the conclusion. Schirra writes some of his thoughts on his historic Mercury-Atlas 8 mission, part: “I named my Mercury flight Sigma 7 to remind everyone of the engineers and technicians who made the Mercury program succeed. Liftoff was very much like predicted with rumbling, a little shaking and some noise. En route Deke Slayton, fellow astronaut and Capcom, asked if I was a turtle. I recorded the answer to avoid broadcasting it to the world.” In fine condition.
Schirra was originally commissioned to write seven of these personal recollections of his Mercury-Atlas 8 mission. He was, however, only able to pen this one example before his passing in 2007, making this particular handwritten statement one of a kind.
