Lawyer, professor, and jurist (1882-1965) who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States; appointed to the seat by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, he became the third Jewish person to serve on the Supreme Court. TLS signed “F. F.,” one page, 6.5 x 9, personal letterhead, November 10, 1938. Letter to the Hon. Charles Poletti, on his election as lieutenant governor of New York. In part: "It can't be so much to win an election even by a majority of a quarter of a million, for it's been done so often by people who weren't so terribly much themselves. But to win without tarnishing one's own standards of public morality, to carry on a campaign on a level of sincerity and forthrightness, to educate the electorate to the understanding of the complexities of modern government—all that is as rare as it is precious. From the beginning to the end such has been the quality of your campaign, and you will enter your high office with an esteem engendered wholly by your qualities of worth upon which I know you will build still deeper insight and wider vision and undiminished courage which your new opportunities and your new responsibilities will call forth." In fine condition, with toning along the edges.
