Description

Ericsson cancels a date on the Iron Witch

Swedish-American Army engineer (1803-1889) who designed and built the ironclad warship Monitor for the American Navy. ALS signed “J. Ericsson,” one page, 8.5 x 10.75, May 4 [circa 1846]. Handwritten letter to business partner M. O. Roberts, in full: "I regret to say that Mr. Sargent has ordered me to attend at their office by 5 o'clock in a matter of vital importance—it will therefore be impossible for me to meet you on board the Witch as agreed upon this morning." Addressed on reverse by Ericsson to "M. O. Roberts, Esqr., on board Iron Witch, Phoenix Foundry." In very good to fine condition, with light creasing and multiple intersecting folds. "Sargent" is likely Frederick Sargent, a British engineer and specialist in the design and construction of electrical generating stations.

The Iron Witch, built in 1844 by Hogg and Delamater of New York, was constructed for Hudson river service and was one of the 'freaks' of the early forties, having an iron hull. She was designed by John Ericsson, designer of the famous Monitor, which engaged the Confederate ram Merrimac in the first battle of iron-clad vessels during the Civil War, and was fitted with a special type of engine and very small side-wheels. The Iron Witch appeared on the river on August 10, 1846, and was placed in service on the Albany day route in line with the Metamora, forming an opposition line.
