Description

Debut EP from the Rolling Stones, signed days before their historic first American tour

Very rare 1964 UK vinyl pressing (DFE 8560) of the Rolling Stones’ self-titled debut EP, signed on the back cover in blue ballpoint by the entire group: Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, and Bill Wyman. The consignor notes that the signatures were obtained at the Adelphi Theatre in Slough, England, on May 30, 1964, which was the final show of their second British tour and just days before the band's ‘1st American Tour 1964.’ In fine condition, with a small area of surface loss to the upper left corner. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks and by a letter of provenance from the original recipient: "In the early sixties I lived and went to school in Marlow, Bucks. One of my school friends was Keith Lockyer, the younger son of the Manager of the Adelphi Theatre on Bath Road in Slough. Whenever a pop tour was on I was able to obtain tickets early/preferentially, the most notable being for The Beatles first National Tour in 1963. As Keith worked backstage he was able to put the record sleeves in the Artists Dressing Rooms for autographing. That is how I was able to get my Rolling Stones EP autographed in 1964, which also includes the signature of Brian Jones. I also went to the gig in 1964.”

The Rolling Stones released their self-titled debut EP on January 10, 1964, a few days into their first co-headlining tour with the Ronettes. Shooting to the top of the UK charts, where it remained for 14 weeks, it has the honor of being the group’s first No. 1 disc. This was also the first time the band would appear on the cover of an official UK Rolling Stones record. The iconic image was captured in London on September 25, 1963, by famed British photographer Tony Gale. This image has become synonymous with the Rolling Stones’ early career and was widely used to promote the band, be it on promotional cards, concert posters, or programs. It was on the strength of this EP that the band was allowed to re-enter the studio and record their debut album. Early signed Rolling Stones studio recordings are quite rare and this is an outstanding example of their historic debut EP, few of which have ever surfaced.
