Rare spiral-bound report entitled "An Evaluation of an Enclosed-Inline Concept for a C-5 Vertical Assembly Building (VAB), Revision 1," prepared for the Launch Facilities Design Group, 180 pages, 9 x 11, dated July 3, 1962. The front cover is annotated "Copy 6 of 40," and a partial distribution list is stapled inside the front cover. The report presents an engineering evaluation of the C-5 Vertical Assembly Building (VAB) Enclosed-Inline Concept to be used in conjunction with a crawler-type Transporter/Launcher, offering an evaluation of the structure, systems, preliminary design, and estimated costs. In addition to summarizing the project in total, the report includes a number of interesting fold-out drawings and schematics detailing the proposed building, crawler, and associated systems. A fifty-page appendix outlines the calculations, assumptions, and estimates used in creating the report. In fine condition.
NASA broke ground on its Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) in 1963, built for the vertical assembly of the Apollo-Saturn V space vehicle (originally called the Saturn C-5). At a height of 526 feet, it remains the largest single-story building in the world.
