British-born American painter of portraits and historical scenes (1783-1872) such as Washington's Passage of the Delaware. Scarce ALS signed “Thos. Sully,” one page, 8.5 x 10.75, August 8, 1853. Handwritten letter to his client, the noted author, artist, and explorer Charles Lanman, in full: "I send you by Adams' Express the Portrait, and Daguerreotype. I have attended to each portion of the remarks you have favored me with; and have endeavored to improve the copy from the Daguerreotype. If I have the pleasure to meet your approbation, it will greatly reward me." In the lower portion, Sully adds his artist invoice, writing out the total amount for the portrait, frame, and freight, and subtracts $20 already received, which amounts to a balance due of $78.25. In very good to fine condition, with scattered faint irregular staining.
