American pilot and physicist (1921-1966) who reached the edge of outer space on two separate X-15 aircraft flights in 1963; he tragically passed away when his F-104 Starfighter crashed during a publicity photo shoot. TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, NASA Flight Research Center letterhead, December 27, 1963. Letter to Frank Izzo, in full: "Thank you for the good wishes and the two songs you sent me. I appreciate them very much. In fine condition, with three partial binder holes to the left edge, and light show-through at the bottom edge from a Beckett sticker on the back. A desirable letter by this hard-to-find test pilot.
