Description

Manuscript DS as president, one page both sides, 10 x 14, June 9, 1870. President Grant appoints John L. Stevens as the "Minister Resident of the United States to the Republic of Uruguay" and directs the seal of the United States to be affixed to an "Article providing for the extension of the time for exchanging the ratifications of the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation between the United States and the Oriental Republic of Uruguay." Signed neatly at the conclusion by U. S. Grant, and countersigned by Secretary of State Hamilton Fish. The original white seal remains affixed to the left side. Double-matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Grant to an overall size of 23 x 20.5; a window to frame backing reveals the first page of the document. In fine condition.

A senator from Maine, Stevens (1820-1895) is most well-known as the leader of the 1893 coup that temporarily deposed the Hawaiian government while he was Ambassador to the Hawaiian Islands. When Grover Cleveland assumed the presidency shortly thereafter, he reinstated the queen and recalled Minster Stevens from Hawaii and forced him into retirement.
