American aerospace engineer and an aviation/space pioneer (1913-2000) who was the first director of NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center, which was later renamed the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. Two items: a TLS, signed “Robert R. Gilruth,” one page, 8 x 10.5, NASA letterhead, July 27, 1962, in full: “Thank you for your letter and good wishes. I have autographed the enclosed card for you as you requested. All of us who are engaged in our manned space flight program appreciate the interest shown by people such as you. Please accept my best wishes for continued success in your hobby”; and the referenced off-white 5 x 3 card, which is signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Michael Anderson with very best regards—Robert R. Gilruth.” In overall fine condition, with a couple of adhesive remnants to bottom third of letter.
