United States Army officer (1895-1965) who saw distinguished active service during World War II; between 1943-45, he successively commanded the 3rd Infantry Division, VI Corps, Fifteenth Army, and Fifth Army. World War II-dated TLS signed “L. K. Truscott, Jr.,” two pages, 8 x 10.5, Headquarters Fifth Army, Office of the Commanding General letterhead, August 7, 1945. Letter to Theodore R. Stillwell, in part: "I am always glad to hear from you good people on the home front, who support us so loyally with your sacrifices and hard work at home, your bond buying, and your letters to us in the service. I am sorry that the war’s end and the problems that have arisen with the coming of the peace prevented my answering you sooner.
From the Dieppe Raid through the North African landings, up Italy to Anzio and above Rome, over to Southern France, then back to Italy, and up through the mountains and over the Po Valley was a long journey which took several years; but it was worth it to be through all that when we saw the German defeat in North Italy turn into an utter rout.
You can see from this little account of my experiences in this war that more of my time over here has been spent in Italy than in any other theater. It was a privilege during all that time to serve with General Clark, whom you speak of corresponding with while he was a Fifth Army Commander. I know him well and have continued my pleasant association with him since I returned to Fifth Army as its commander, as Fifth Army was part of the Fifteenth Army Group.” In fine condition, with staple holes to the upper left corner, and the signature a bit light.
