Description

Partly-printed DS, one page, 14.5 x 8, March 22, 1797. As governor of New York, Jay appoints William Gelston as "Quarter Master of the Regiment of Militia in the County of Columbia whereof Jacob Rutsen Van Rensselaer Esquire is Lieutenant Colonel Commandant." Signed neatly in the left margin by John Jay, and countersigned by Lewis A. Scott as secretary. The white paper seal remains affixed to upper left corner. Matted to an overall size of 21 x 11. In fine condition, with faint toning along the folds.
