Nordic monarch (1829-1907) who reigned as King of Sweden (1872-1907) and King of Norway (1872-1905), during which both countries saw rapid periods of industrialization but a gradual decline of their union, resulting in a peaceful dissolution in 1905. Oscar is remembered as a patron of the arts and sciences, founding the world's first open-air museum at Bygdøy, commissioning a new opera house for the Royal Swedish Opera, and sponsoring the polar expeditions of Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld and Fridtjof Nansen.
