Description

French physician and politician (1738-1814) whose name became synonymous with the 'humane' instrument of execution whose use he proposed to the government during the French Revolution. Rare DS in French, signed "Guillotin," one page, 6.5 x 7, February 28, 1810. Document entitled (translated) "Free Consultation of the Academy of Medicine of Paris," with the left-hand column headed "Names of the Academicians called for consultation" and listing six names below. The right-hand column bears the signatures of the Academicians, with Joseph Guillotin signing at the top. Archivally matted and framed with photos and a caption to an overall size of 27.25 x 15.25. In fine condition, with scattered light foxing. After being freed from prison in 1794 after Robespierre fell from power, Guillotin abandoned his political career to resume the medical profession, and would become one of the founders of the Academy of Medicine of Paris. An exceptional example of the scarce inventor, who, in spite of his namesake invention, was opposed to the death penalty.
