American socialite, political hostess, and United States ambassador to Luxembourg (1889-1975) who was known for her lavish parties for Washington, D.C., society. She was the inspiration for Irving Berlin's musical Call Me Madam, which starred Ethel Merman as the character based on Mesta in both the Broadway play and the movie. Matte-finish 11 x 12 photo of Mesta seated and draped in white fur, affixed to the original Seawell Photography mount, which is signed in blue ballpoint, "With warmest regards, Perle Mesta."
