French general (1856-1951) who was honored as a national hero for his defense of Verdun during World War I, but who was convicted after World War II of dealings with the enemy while head of the collaborationist Vichy regime. Official vintage matte-finish 10.5 x 13.5 Signal Corps photo of Petain at an Awards Ceremony wearing the American Distinguished Service Medal, signed and inscribed in fountain pen in French to General Johnson Hagood, "Ph. Petain, 22. 12. 20." In fine condition. Johnson Hagood (1873-1948) was commissioned in the artillery and served in France during World War I where he created the Services of Supply. His decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal and Commander of the Légion d'honneur.
