British novelist and philosopher (1919-1999) whose novels concerned good and evil, sexual relationships, morality, and the power of the unconscious. Two items: a satin-finish 9.5 x 12 close-up photo, signed in the lower border in fountain pen, “Iris Murdoch,” with the reverse bearing a Times newspaper copyright stamp; and an ALS, one page, 8.25 x 11, dated by another to August 16, 1983, handwritten to Neil Carter, in full: “Thank you very much for your kind and encouraging letter. I’m so glad you liked the book. It is good of you to write to say so. With all my very best wishes to you.” In overall fine condition, with tape-repaired splitting to the fold on the letter directly under Murdoch's signature.
