Pioneering American entrepreneur and philanthropist (1795-1869) who lent his support to such venerable institutions as the Peabody Institute in Baltimore and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. Uncommon 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo by Disderi of Paris, signed in the lower border in black ink, "George Peabody," and signed and inscribed on the reverse, "For Mrs. Tinker, with the compliments of George Peabody of London, 30th Sept. 1863." In fine condition, with light soiling.
