British surgeon (1827-1912) who pioneered the practice of sterile surgery, one of the most important medical advances of the day. Very rare 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet bust portrait of Lister by G. Jerrard of London, signed and inscribed at the bottom of the image in black ink, "Joseph Lister, with best regards to his friend Dr. Fessler." In very good condition, with moderate overall toning to the image and some newspaper clippings affixed to reverse. Exceptionally rare in this format, this is the only example of a Lister signed photo that we have ever offered. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.
