Boston-born Baptist minister and academic (1808-1895) best known as the lyricist of ‘America’ (‘My Country, ’Tis of Thee’), written while he was a student at Andover Theological Seminary. AQS on an off-white 3.5 x 2.5 slip, in full: "My country 'tis of thee, / Sweet land of liberty, / of thee I sing. S. F. Smith, Oct. 20, 1893." Attractively matted and framed with a typed caption to an overall size of 11.25 x 11.25. In fine condition.
