Description

"I did the thing mainly for Duke Wayne and Jack Ford"

American writer, playwright, and critic (1894-1968) best known for his 1924 play, 'What Price Glory,' co-written with Maxwell Anderson, and his autobiographical novel, Plumes, which narrated his military service during World War I. TLS signed “Laurence Stallings,” one page, 8.25 x 11, no date. Letter to literary agent H. N. Swanson, in part: "About the only piece that I would like to market is the Yellow Tavern story. I am busy on the novel I started last year, and believe that from now I will be a steady worker. I wish you could interest Clarence Brown in Yellow Tavern as a job for Claude Jarman, as it is really a fine thing for a juvenile. The woman in the story is deliberately kept in the background, as I did the thing mainly for Duke Wayne and Jack Ford. I have held off, because of his many kindnesses to me, but a year without income is too long." He adds a postscript, initialed "L.S.," in full: "P.S. I am writing John Ford and believe it would be generous of you to check with him on Yellow Tavern." In fine condition.
