Description

"Proudly I salute Poland as a symbol of faith in life and man’s inexhaustible capacity for turning disaster into achievement"

World War II-dated TLS in pencil, two pages, 7.25 x 10.5, October 13, 1940. Letter to Jan Wasilewski, in full: "It was a touching privilege for both Polly and me to spend last evening with you and Suzanne as guests of the Polish Government in its Pavilion at the New York World’s Fair. What I saw with the eyes in my fingers of an exhibit thrillingly rich in history, poetry, romance and artistic workmanship brought Poland very close to me.—Poland tossed amid dark vicissitudes yet always strong—an epic vibrant with the saga of the defense of Warsaw—a nation that was shattered but did not fall. Mentally I could picture more vividly than before Poland with its sweet, bread-giving fields, its home full of hospitable neighborliness and the ‘wide-browed women’ whom Joseph Conrad describes so tenderly, its religious fervor symbolized in majesty of stone and graceful spire, its brilliant contributions to science and literature. The beauty you crowded into my visit will remain a cherished memory. What I felt most as we walked through the Pavilion is the unquenchable courage of Poland. Many times afflicted, it still is mighty with the spirit that creates light and harmony. In a real sense a race that has given birth to Kosciusko, Paderewski, and Madame Curie can never be conquered. Its magnificent perseverance for liberty against impossible odds is a holy fire which will forge yet higher courage for coming generations. Proudly I salute Poland as a symbol of faith in life and man’s inexhaustible capacity for turning disaster into achievement. Will you kindly convey to the group upholding the Polish Government my cordial thanks for their gallant thought of me—an honor I feel profoundly. Polly unites her thanks with mine for her share in last evening’s unique pleasure and inspiration.” In fine condition, with some light soiling and a short fold split. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA, and by the original mailing envelope, addressed in the hand of Polly Thomson.
